David Walliams' best-selling children's novel Mr Stink is to be adapted into a comedy drama for BBC One, it has been announced.

The book, about a smelly tramp who is befriended by a girl called Chloe, will be broadcast later this year.

Walliams, who has written the script for the hour-long film, said he was "beyond thrilled" that the book was being adapted for television.

Details on cast members will be announced at a later date.

Mr Stink was recently shortlisted for a Blue Peter award for the best children's novel of the last decade.

BBC One controller Danny Cohen described its story as a "heart-warming, nose-clenching and funny tale which will appeal to viewers of all ages".

The book, Walliams' second children's novel, was published in 2009 and has sold 250,000 copies.

The 40-year-old is best known for starring alongside Matt Lucas in the comic sketch shows Little Britain and Come Fly With Me.
